An appeal has been made to Islamic scholars to educate their followers on the need to support the current national drive aimed at ensuring energy security through sustained campaign for regular payments of electricity bills and protection of power supply assets in their localities.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Kaduna Electric, Engineer Garba Haruna made the appeal yesterday in Kaduna while delivering a keynote address at an interactive session with Chief Imams of Jumu’at mosques organised by the Company in conjunction with the Kaduna State Bureau for Interfaith (Islam ).
Engineer Garba Haruna who was represented by the Company Secretary/Legal adviser, Barrister Abbas Ahmed disclosed that since the privatisation of the Company in December 2014, the Company has never in any month realised the cost of energy supplied to electricity users in it franchise area and called on the Imams to “draw the attention of their congregation to the implications of failing to discharge such obligations”.
He announced that Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company which operates in Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara States is also loosing valuable power supply equipment worth millions of naira every month to the activities of vandals and appealed for the support of the clergy men to tackle the menace.
In his contribution, the Special Adviser to Kaduna State Governor, Sheikh Muhammad Khamis Almeesry commended the Management of Kaduna Electric for taking the initiative to engage with religious leaders/imams whom he described as”effective institution for social orientation and community mobilisation.”
He charged the Imams to always preach the value of God fearing, honesty, avoidance of prohibited acts and communal vigilance.
In his contribution, the Chief Imam of Tudun Wada Central Mosque, Kaduna, Sheikh Abdulkareem Hashim Bindawa, urged the Electricity Distribution Company to sustain the engagement with leaders of all spectrum of the society and called on Muslims to always pay their electricity bills. “It is an obligation on every one of us to pay for any product purchased or service enjoyed as we shall all be held accountable for our deeds in the day of judgement,” he stated
