The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Kaduna Electric, Dr. Umar Abubakar Hashidu has described the challenges bedevilling the nation’s power sector as “multi-faceted and multi dimensional” that require a positive attitude from all Nigerians to deal with.
Dr. Umar Hashidu made the assertion in Kaduna yesterday when he granted audience to the leadership of National Association of Polytechnic Students, NAPS led by the National President, Comrade Rilwan Opeyemi.
The Kaduna Electric Boss disclosed that the nation’s power sector has not measured up to expectations because we as Nigerians have not lived up to our respective responsibilities.
” In the count down to the privatisation of the power sector, we had high expectations; we all want steady and uninterrupted power supply but our commitment towards this has fallen short. We are all customers of one DISCO or the other. We must individually and collectively keep faith with our respective responsibilities to achieve that, “he said.
He revealed that the company is fully aware of its responsibility and understands why the distribution layer of the electricity value chain is constantly criticized because it carries the burden of the entire sector.
“We in the distribution layer are always in the news, often for a wrong reason. Understandably, we bear the brunt of the entire sector; but I want you to understand that the fault(s) are not always entirely ours; if we fail to pay our bills or engage in energy theft or vandalism, these acts have adverse effects on the entire sector. This is what we want Nigerians to understand and appreciate, “he asserted.
Dr Hashidu also charged the NAPS leadership and by extension, the entire Nigerian students to channel their energy, time and God’s given talents to positive undertakings and called on students to shun illicit drugs, cultism, Internet fraud, etc.
Earlier, the National President of NAPS, Comrade Rilwan Opeyemi appealed to the Managing Director of Kaduna Electric for improved electricity services to higher institutions of learning and more consideration to students quarters in the four franchise States of the Company.
He also commended the management of Kaduna Electric for giving the students audience even with the short notice.
